Socialism, or any left wing politics that has been enacted in the past 3000 years has always ended in a tyranical regeim that lasts longer than the "free" legt wing ideals.

Back to the title, who else but the US is in a position to defend freedom and liberty? Not europe, they will be islamic by the end of the century simply due to birth rates prior to 2010, with all the new "refugees" that will only speed up the conversion. Not China, its illegal to talk about Tenamin Square. Smurf in Russia, yes probably not. Germany? 800,000 islamic male refugees ready to be an army. The middle east? Once they are out of oil watch out. Africa, too much corruption and tribal thinking still to ever unify for strength.

Right now the best hope for the planet is the US.

Or colonizing Mars and getting off this rock.

We are not and we never really were. Sure the U.S has done things to promoted democracy. But we also were allies of the brutal governments in Central America during their civil wars . Because the rebels were communist. But these governments weren't true democracies either. Saddam Hussain was out friend when he was at war with Iran. Despite the fact he massacred thousands of his own citizens. We looked the other way with Pinochet because he kept communists out of his country . But he also killed thousands of leftists and anyone else he thought was a threat. The U.S will protect it's own interests above all else. And I don't think there is anything wrong with that . But that ' Best hope for freedom around world stuff is bullshit. We are selling weapons to Saudi Arabia despite their lack of rights for some and high civilian death rate in Yemen. He sell weapons to other countries with spotty human rights records as well. Politics especially global politics make strange bedfellows indeed.

An outsider perspective, it never was and is not going to be.

Never was as - as all instances that the US took a stand was when they had something personal at stake. Not for the local populace or to assuage anyone's pain. All were for a personal gain, that too not of America but of some lobby.

Never will be - as all world currently sees (even as many stating above) is Red Vs Blue. If citizens are blind towards a) what is good for them, b) what's good for country and c) what is good for that world. How, can it ever be any hope.
