Is gardening a hobby or a chore?

I am lucky to have a nice garden, and I usually enjoy working in it in all weathers, but sometimes it seems like a chore and it can be costly for plants and tools. Ours (mine at the moment, because we are separated) overlooks open field at the back and I do sometimes think not having a garden, but just looking out onto the fields, would be easier and nicer.

Do others feel gardening is a hobby, or a chore?

I sometimes think of employing a gardener but then I think I do really enjy even the hard work and the tedium. It's strange - like so many things, if it isn't hard it isn't so satisfying.

well, it is definitely both but I think the efforts are worth it, especially when I'm relaxing on the terrace having a beautiful view in summer time

It's a chore if it's an inescapable requirement.

Depends on the person. For me I enjoy gardening, find something peaceful and relaxing about it, however if you have no choice and you do not want to, then I can see how it can be a chore for some

I see it more as a part of general housekeeping: if I didn't have a garden I wouldn't seek one out so it isn't really a hobby, but neither is it a chore in the sense of an unwanted task - I usually enjoy doing it, even though at some times of year it can take many hours and be very hard heavy work.

that's rather difficult, some people LOVE tending to the garden to keep it looking nice, it's worse when you have a big lawn and have to mow it often, i'm 50/50 on the nswer, ( not much use replying really ) lol

Yes, I think you are right. But during lockdown, with much more time at home, it has been easier to fall back in love with gardening because there is time to do it properly: while now as restrictions lift here I am already beginning to find it sometimes a chore.

To answer your initial question: Kinda both! But it can be very fulfilling. Like cleaning the house. It's a constantly rewarding process for me. Just as it can be cathartic to sort stuff etc. In the end you look at your work and can be really proud about it. (well..most of the time)

Honestly it depends on why you are gardening, if you live at home and are being mare to do it it feels like a chore, or if it's like a mundane maintenance task it can feel like a chore. But if you are doing it because it genuinely brings you joy then it's definitely a hobby. And it can even be a job so neither in some cases.

I think I love it too - especially at this time of year when the fruit trees blossom and the forget-me-nots and bluebells look like a sea of blue.
