I Am The Walrus - Foetus (Knitting Factory NYC 1995)

Anyone who has noticed my music posts would've picked up on who my #1 artist is, the mighty JG Thirlwell, particularly his solo Foetus project work. I've held off posting any live footage as it is - in stark contrast to his studio work - as rough as guts. But herein lies distinct aspects of the industrial era music as a whole and about Jim's singular approach to his music. Industrial grew directly out of the disillusionment of punk's (overall) failings in being a sociopolitical force and in its musicality. The advent of digital production, midi, sequencing and sampling were eagerly embraced along with a sophistication and complexity of composition from the prog rock they loved, but with the sonic brutality and energy they loved about punk. They created music in the studio that was in large impossible to reproduce live as had happened to much of prog music (eg Tubular Bells by Mike Oldfield), so they just stripped it back and went for it. For Jim the live gig wasn't even on his radar in any sense, the studio was his instrument. He did play all instruments on his earlier albums but couldn't play any instrument to the level needed, so it was through the studio that he could put it all together. He couldn't do that on stage and at the time couldn't afford to pay others to fill in the gaps, so just didn't let it worry him.

Lecture over, sorry about that. Sort of lol.

From then to now. Jim neither stands still nor totally reinvents himself to suit current trends or fashion, he truly evolves as a musician like few others.

Doing something different. These are the only two videos from my dad playing and singing. They're ancient history, but will forever hold a special place in my heart
