1916 World War One : The final Battle of the Somme, on the River Ancre. By the end of the battle, (which started on 1st July 2016) the British Army had suffered 420,000 casualties including 19,240 fatalities on the first day alone. The French lost 200,000 men and the Germans nearly 500,000. The Battle of the Somme epitomised the futility of trench warfare and the indiscriminate slaughter of so many men.

#OnThisDay, in 1914, London-born Lieutenant John Dimmer of the 2nd Battalion, the King's Royal Rifle Corps, displayed exceptional courage.

During the German attack at Klein Zillebeke, Dimmer manned his machine gun and was shot five times - thrice by shrapnel, twice by bullets. Nevertheless he remained at his post, firing and reloading one-handed until his gun was destroyed. Despite his wounds Dimmer insisted he personally report the successful defence to HQ.

While recovering in a French hospital, Dimmer learned he had been awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions, which he was duly presented with at Buckingham Palace on 13 January 1915.

He was killed in action while leading an infantry charge on horseback on 12 March 1918, aged 34.

Can't keep track of all these English titles. I had a customer once who was the I believe Baroness of something. But her brothers was not the Baron of whatever. He was something else. She explained it and I was even more confusing lol

Good article on it. Basically, a named title is often passed down to the eldest son, though can be a Daughter now. Any other child has a lesser title. Its the case that you can only have one King/Queen, other other children have lesser titles.

Ok that actually clarifies a lot. Like why Harry and his brother have different titles. Not that it matters much to us in America. They are Diana's kids and she was popular here so they could be the whatever of whatever people would still come to see them lol

    Yep, exactly that :)

You also find that some have multiple titles, so instead of passing on everything to one child. They split them up.
