The 2018 Oscars Thread

Resident
The 2018 Academy Awards ceremony will be held on March 4. The nominations will be announced live around 7:20 AM Central Time (US) this morning, or a couple hours after this is posted. This first post in the thread contains my predictions of the nominees in the 6 major categories. As a huge film geek, the Oscars are my Super Bowl (especially since the Saints lost over a week ago!) And I love the drama of the nominations as well.

I was going to post this after the nominations were announced, but decided it would be fun to put myself out there with my nomination predictions. I'm only good at three things: watching movies, watching plays/musicals, and eating cake. So I have a ton of confidence when it comes to the Oscars, the Tonys, and kids birthday parties:p!

These are NOT necessarily who I think are the most deserving in each category, but who I think the Academy will honor with their nominations. I will not edit this first post after putting it up, so I can either brag later on or look like a complete idiot (I can see where this is likely heading... :oops:)

My PREDICTIONS for the nominees in the Big 6 categories:

Best Picture:

The number of nominees in this category fluctuates. There will be a minimum of 5 nominees and a maximum of 10. Usually the number comes in at 8 or 9 nominations in this category. I am predicting 9 nominees.

* Call Me By Your Name
* Dunkirk
* The Florida Project
* Get Out
* I, Tonya
* Lady Bird
* The Post
* The Shape of Water
* Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

If it stretches to ten nominations, The Darkest Hour will sneak in. If they only go with eight this year, either I, Tonya or The Florida Project will fall from this list. Incidentally, to me it is a shame that The Florida Project is right on the edge of possibly not getting in the field. Along with Lady Bird, it was the best film I saw this year.
________

Best Actress:

* Sally Hawkins, The Shape of Water
* Frances McDormand, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
* Margot Ronnie, I, Tonya
* Saoirse Ronan, Lady Bird
* Meryl Streep, The Post
________

Best Actor:

* Timothee Chalamet, Call Me By Your Name
* Daniel Day-Lewis, The Phantom Thread
* James Franco, The Disaster Artist
* Daniel Kaluuya, Get Out
* Gary Goldman, The Darkest Hour
________

Best Supporting Actress:

* Mary J. Blige, Mudbound
* Holly Hunter, The Big Sick
* Allison Janney, I, Tonya
* Laurie Metcalf, Lady Bird
* Octavia Spencer, The Shape of Water
________

Best Supporting Actor:

* Willem Dafoe, The Florida Project
* Armie Hammer, Call Me By Your Name
* Richard Jenkins, The Shape of Water
* Christopher Plummer, All the Money in the World
* Sam Rockwell, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
________

Best Director:

* Guillermo Del Toro, The Shape of Water
* Greta Gerwig, Lady Bird
* Martin McDonagh, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
* Christopher Nolan, Dunkirk
* Jordan Peele, Get Out
________

Sometime after the nominations are announced today, I will post the actual nominees in a later post. Then this thread can just be for anyone who has seen any of the nominated films, or maybe ones you thought should have been nominated but were snubbed, performances you liked or didn't this year, Oscar trivia - whatever! If you like movies, we can ride this thread up to the Oscars! If not, I will have no problem just entertaining myself in this thread, so don't mind me :p:p!

Well, there were some surprises! But I did all right on the predictions:

Best Picture: I got 7/9 correct
Best Actress: 5/5
Best Actor: 4/5
Best Supporting Actress: 4/5
Best Supporting Actor: 4/5
Best Director: 4/5

Total: 28/34 correct

Overall, the biggest disappointment to me was the lack of love for The Florida Project, which is an incredible film about people on the fringes of society. Willem Dafoe was so deserving of the Best Supporting Actor nomination he received, but this movie deserved a lot more nominations. I was afraid it would miss out on Best Picture, but thought it was a shoo-in for a screenplay nomination. Go Willem, the only nominee for the best movie of 2017.

Glad to see the love for Lady Bird, my other favorite film of the year.
