Books The Last Book You Read

No Name - Wilkie Collins

A friend of Charles Dickens (through whom he got his start as a published author) was the first fiction writer to truly have a lead heroine who was the driving force of his novel. Now of course the response will be Jane Austen, but not quite so. Emma and Elizabeth (from "Emma" and "Pride and Prejudice" respectively) were witty, educated and able to think for themselves, but they still chose to content themselves with circumstance as society saw fit. Not Wilkie's heroines, they took the status quo and wrung it by the neck to get equality and justice.

P.S. If you haven't read Emma (or Pride and Prejudice), they are truly witty and good observations of their day. Just avoid "Sense and Sensibility" and "Mansfield Park", melodramatic in ways I thought only possible by Victor Hugo - bleah.

Twice Dead King by Nate Crowley.

Nerd novel from the Warhammer universe, pretty cool will probably listen to the second part again soon.

If it's what I've actually read physically, Fabius Bile Primogenitor, cool story also from the Warhammer universe. Got a limited edition version too.

Circe by Madeline Miller

Not with this awesome cover unfortunately. A great read for anyone with an interest in Greek mythology.

I have read "The Odyssey" by Homer and "Metamorphoses" by Ovid (our main sources for the Circe mythos) and she is indeed one of the true forces within Greek mythology as one of the most powerful enchantresses. Few survived any encounter with her intact without the help of the gods. Beautiful looking cover.

Listened to some more audio dramas at work, all just stuff listened to before.

All nerd stuff.

The Long Night, A Lesson In Darkness and Dark Compliance.

All a good listen and pretty short.

Think I'll listen to House of Night and Chain again soon for a more spooky Halloween story.

Candide - Voltaire

With some fairly major changes occurring for me at the moment I needed something to lift my spirits and what better than some biting satire from arguably France's greatest philosopher, Voltaire. From the rose tinted view of "the best of all possible worlds" to a manageable way of living within an inherently chaotic world, our everyman hero is a true inspiration to all of us trying to not only keep our heads above water, but trying to do so with dignity of self and a genuine care and concern for those around us.

Finished House of Night and Chain, enjoyed his descent into madness, how his manor and family are cursed from ages past.

Especially the whole thing of getting lost in his new home with no idea how to get back. His wife's diary explaining odd things that happened to her when she lived in the home.

How she felt drained and powerless when leaving the manor, only feeling well when within the walls of said manor.

Was just enjoyable in general.

Probably gonna listen to Dr Who Spare Parts and maybe some more Audio Dramas from Warhammer I've not listened to in a while, maybe Fabius Bile: Repairer of Ruin.

Hope you're all still enjoying books and audio books.

I think it was around my 10th or 12th birthday (might have been xmas) that I received the best present from one of my brothers (as in best ever given and I can't remember if he ever gave me any others - arsehole) which was a copy of the just recently released "Doctor Who and the Genesis of the Daleks"and I think "The Auton Invasion". Not sure of the second now, but defs Genesis. Loved them and went on to collect quite a few which I still have. Not quite side by side with Plato, but certainly just as proudly within my library along with all those other geezers.

There is a lot of good Dr Who episodes, both show, audio and written forms.

Genesis of the Daleks is arguably one of the greatest, if not the greatest serial of Dr Who so I'm not surprised it spurred you on to get more. Auton Invasion doesn't spring to mind, probably something to do with Pertwee's Doctor or maybe Troughton's Doctor.

Usually I don't bother much with those I can watch as I already know the story generally, but the extra stories are great, Big Finish usually creates a few extras like Spare Parts, Energy of the Daleks as well as McGann's Doctor having a whole series through off screen media after the movie failed to get interest in the show.

The Auton Invasion was the first of the Pertwee era adventures with the original series being called "Spearhead From Space", hence your probable confusion. It was the first to feature the Autons (another Terrance Dicks creation) as the 'guest villain'. Pertwee was my grounding in Dr Who (in b&w) and remember them all with great fondness. Gotta love Bessie.
