Do you think that the Korean system of education is overemphasizing grades while at the same time having inadequate emphasis on nurturing creativity, thinking outside the box etc (this criticism could easily be directed to any other Asian countries as well, and my question does not necessarily hint on my own personal opinion)

While I do agree that South Korea has always placed a lot on grades and have a loss with nurturing it has gotten better. It is not perfect by any means. Some children are in school 13 to 15 hours a day and some even longer to prepare them for sky. The top three universities. SEOUL NATIONAL UNIVERSITY, Korea University, and yonsei University. Those are the best of the best that every student tries to get into. There has always been a Korean saying: if you sleep 3 hours a day you will get into a SKY university, you can get into a SKY university, If you sleep 4 hours a day you might get into a SKY university. If you sleep 5 or more hours a day especially you last year you can forget about SKY university. While this message may seem crazy to outsiders it is something that all Koreans are used to hearing since they start school. Academics is not the only reason for this bullying is number two if not number one for some on the list. In the recent years the number of known bullying incidents have gone down, but you will always have bullying. So i believe the changes the government has made to help children such as the shutting down of late night hangwon, cram schools.
