Animation - cartoons to features and everything inbetween

Evangelion 3.0 +1.0 Thrice Upon A Time

This is the sound design concept tryout for the opening battle scene. There's no dialogue and only the actual fight sequences shown, but it does showcase the absolutely phenomenal animation of the four final movies and why they took so long to produce.

Papa Carlo's Theatre - Rao Heidmets (Presented with the Estonian Film Institute)

The local dictator - the puppet master in a marionette theater, who suppresses any expression of free will in his actors and terrorizes the audience, is himself also only a puppet in the hands of more powerful and anonymous forces.

An interesting....... Short.... To say at least. The music was one to show emotion. Especially 4 to 5 minutes into the short where things de-escalate.

When the Wind Blows - Jimmy T. Murakami (Graphic Novel and Characters by Raymond Briggs)

A naive and elderly British couple who have endured the onslaught of World War 2 when they were younger, survive the initial onslaught of a Nuclear War. Only to witness themselves feeling the nuclear sting of fallout and their health begin to decline, only to perish with the husband, Jim, to utter the final story to his beloved, Hilda.

This movie is apparently hard to find online, however, can be found on the Internet Archive. Can also be viewed on Tubi, as well as Night Flight Plus and Eternal Family. I viewed it on Tubi, and I have to say, the graphic novel was different from the movie. One viewing of this, and you'll feel real sad for the couple when they're laying there in their fallout haven and suffer. Sanity snapping not included. "Smile.... Smile..... Smile...." Is not in the movie, sadly. They excised Jim's Smile Song, but they have a couple of dark humor moments. Especially in the movie where Jim tells Hilda to get in the shelter, calling her a "Stupid B-itch". That kinna made me chuckle and go "Oh Nah."

Bluey - ABC (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

Commissioned by our national broadcaster, Bluey started off as literally two blokes working in their shed to become an internationally much loved and highly successful kids show watched by many adults as well. On a side note, the ABC has never had advertising (self promotion of content and product and public service announcements are allowed between programs) and would be the closest cause of a civil war possible here if they tried to change it. And for those in England, we don't pay a license fee either.
We refer to the ABC (in all its tv and radio services) lovingly as just 'Aunty'.

Fighteous - Steroid Maximus

The original track from which the theme for The Venture Bros was taken.
For those interested in the OST side of things, this is where all the music for The Venture Bros (apart from less than 1%) came from in the beginning before Thirlwell started dedicated scoring. The album is called Quilombo.

Burn-Up! W - Hiroshi Negishi

The second of four entries in the franchise, it surprisingly goes from screwball comedy to high stakes criminal drama.

Heroic Times - József Gémes (Based on the "Toldi trilogy" epic from the 19th century by János Arany) [Presented with MVD and Restored by Deaf Crocodile]

1000002857.jpg

A tragic medieval tale as old as time of a man of inhuman strength, fierce temper and a desire for noble knighthood. While on the run as a murderer, he finds a new life as a knight, but only to face disillusionment, the horrors of war and ugly human vices.

Adapted from the Toldi trilogy, a 19th-century epic poem in three parts by János Arany.

The animated epic is notable for its visual style, which resembles oil painting. It is done with oil painting and rotoscope animation.

The film, like the previous few animation bits I have shared here, can be seen on most streaming services and apps. I previously viewed this hidden gem of a masterpiece on Tubi. Sadly, the film is not impressive to a Hungarian audience but has gained some attraction to others around the world.

Witch's Night Out - John Leach

When a naughty witch hears of a party being held at her haunted mansion, she decided to bring on the fun by showing off her magical tricks and turning the two main characters, Small and Tender into whatever they want to be for Halloween. However, when her wand disappears, Anytown is turned upside down!

It is a forgotten and obscure Halloween special that is a retro and cult Classic that must be viewed by anyone and by whatever means necessary. The special features Catherine O'Hara (from Home Alone) as Malicious, the Natasha-esque character and the late and talented Gilda Radner as the Titular witch.

A very unique style that works perfectly for the story, really nice find.

Horse in the House (Ló A Házban) - Györgyi Csonka (Presented with the National Film Institute Hungary - Film Archive)

An investigation into the sighting of a blue horse with roller skates in an apartment building turns into a burlesque nightmare

An animated short that's so surreal, it even shows the viewer Micky (Mickey) Mouse riding a plane that flies out of a teapot and starts flying through the walls of the man's apartment. Truly a detective-like Kafkaesque animation that's a cute story with an even cuter art style.

Really enjoying your choices, they're mostly unknown to me and all those have made it onto my watch list. Totally agree with you on the animation style and particularly the colour palette they used. Absurdity is way harder and more sophisticated than most would ever contend.

Tetsuo: The Iron Man - Shinya Tsukamoto

A brutal film that incorporated equally brutal production sequences of stop motion and pixilation (where people are used in a stop motion format) animation. I saw this and its sequel "Tetsuo II: Body Hammer" as a double on the big screen, left me numb and speechless. Approach with caution.
