WTF?! (Strange But True Facts)

Finland and North Korea are technically separated by only one country.

Heroin was once used to treat children's coughs.

A lot of people are certainly aware that heroin was widely used medically in the late 1800's and early 1900's.

But many are shocked to learn that the Bayer drug company promoted heroin for use in children suffering from coughs, colds and "irritation" as late as 1912.

There is literally a nuclear bomb lost somewhere off the coast of Georgia.

nuclear-bomb-near-georgia.jpg

In February of 1958, an Air Force jet crashed into a B-47 bomber carrying a 7,600-pound nuclear bomb. The pilot, afraid that the bomb might break loose from the damaged plane, dropped it into the water outside of Savannah, Ga, near Tybee Island. The US military conducted an exhaustive search, but were never able to recover it.

The Air Force originally denied that the bomb contained plutonium, but congressional testimony 8 years later indicated the bomb was a "complete weapon," with a nuclear capsule containing both uranium and plutonium.

*NOTE: I ran across this and was quite surprised I had never heard anything about it. In fact checking it, I ran across an article from 2015 stating that a vacationing Canadian couple actually found the bomb while diving. It turns out this article claiming it had been found was a satirical piece and NOT fact based at all.

So there remains an active nuclear bomb lost somewhere in the waters off the coast near Savannah, Georgia.

The US Air Force today says that it "shouldn't pose a threat" if left undisturbed.

There are several missing nuclear weapons across the world aside from the one mentioned above. One along the pacific coast of America/Canada, two somewhere in the Mediterranean, two somewhere in a North Carolina swamp, one near Japan's islands and two in the middle of the Atlantic ocean.

Good lord, you are correct. I was flabbergasted that the US lost just one nuclear weapon, and now I find out we've lost closer to 10!! I read up on the ones you listed and it is both fascinating and terrifying. Combined, the lost weapons have well over 2000 times the force of the one dropped on Hiroshima. And they're just missing.

Is this common knowledge, or have I just not been paying attention, lol?!

Thank you for adding even more WTF to my WTF regarding this! Each case is absolutely incredible. And unbelievably true.

There is more time separating Stegosaurus and Tyrannosaurus Rex than Tyrannosaurus Rex and us.

Contrary to what many of us think, not all dinosaurs lived together. In fact, many were vastly separated by time.

The Stegosaurus (Jurassic Period) had been extinct for approximately 80-90 million years before the appearance of the Cretaceous-era Tyrannosaurus, making the T-Rex much closer in time to us (we're separated by about 65 million years.)

Of a similar note to TallulahBlue's above post, in the Jurassic Park/World movies the "Raptors" that are depicted are not Velociraptors. They were actually much smaller than how they are depicted, the shown "Raptors" are based on the dinosaur Deinonychus. The writers/producers used the name Velociraptor because it sounded cooler.

St. Valentine's Day has been around for a long time, with many citing a 14th century poem by Geoffrey Chaucer as the first to link the day to lovers.

Chocolate has also been around for a long time.

But we can thank Richard Cadbury for bringing chocolate to Valentine's Day (and possibly the commercialization of the holiday as well.) In 1861, the English chocolatier saw a marketing opportunity and began making heart shaped chocolates in heart shaped boxes.

In the US, Milton Hershey followed suit some years later, and also developed the Hershey's Kisses in response.

Or as I like to call them, St. Cadbury and St. Hershey.

It's also a very popular pain killer during child birth in the UK.

You know you have too many nukes when you misplace a couple like a set of keys

Well the US are not the only country to drop a nuke in anger, fortunately it never reached its destination.

The 13th amendment to the U.S Constitution,( the one that abolished slavery) does not apply to anyone incarcerated. That is why in some states inmates can be made to work without pay. But slavery in the U.S is of course illegal so the labor is considered part of rehabilitation or to pay back the state for the expenses of housing and food.

Did you know that...

John Tyler, who was born in 1790 and was the 10th p.resident of the United States, has two grandchildren who are both still alive today.

Not just great-great grandchildren, or even great grandchildren, but the children of one of his sons.

How?

The Tyler men believed in having children late in life! P.resident John Tyler married a much younger woman after his wife died, and in 1853 (at the age of 63) he fathered Lyon Gardiner Tyler. Lyon, his son, also married again after his wife died, and fathered two children in the 1920's when he was in his 70's. Lyon Gardiner Tyler, Jr. was born in 1924, and Harrison Ruffin Tyler was born in 1928. Both of these men, direct grandchildren of the 10th US p.resident, are alive and well today.

If you're counting, that is a 228 year span encompassing only 3 generations.

EDIT: that is a 228 year span AND STILL COUNTING encompassing only 3 generations
