To believe that some god created the vastness of the universe on the 1st day then spent the next 6 days creating Earth is human arrogance.
How could there be the 1st 3 days when the Sun wasn't created til the 4th day?
Already in less than 1/2 of the 1st page of the bible we have inconsistencies and impossibilities that are from the knowledge of the writers from the time it was written, and sure doesn't seem to be the words from an omniscient being.
There are pages after pages where inconsistencies thrive. Where one thing is said that is completely opposite from what was said earlier.
A book that allows and encourages having, buying, and beating slaves. That allows a man to slay his wife if she is not a virgin, and to go take and possess virgins for himself. That forbids women from talking in church, expressing opinion, or teaching. That allows you to take disobedient children and bash their heads against stones. That bans you from eating shellfish or wearing blended fabrics.
This is your 'go to' book for your morality and beliefs? You reading its stories and believing them as fact is the same as if you read The Lord of the Rings and therefore believe in Hobbits!
Therefor if you are trying to prove that god exists there are 2 very important things to remember. 1) Reading the bible is NOT valid research. 2) "I feel him in my heart" is NOT valid data.
The bible was written reflecting the beliefs and practices of the times it which it was written, about 500 years ago. At a time when beliefs that the stars in the sky were gods was all but a dead belief, and there was a void in a religion to follow. Many religions were pushed during these times, and stories with virgin births, miracles, crucifixions, and resurrections were a dime a dozen. Having a large religion gives those who create it a lot of power. The bible was written for this purpose of controlling power. It was written to promote Christianity... not to document or verify Christ as an actual person in history.
I've heard all of these refutations so many times. Let me go down the list and try to explain as best I can why I still believe, although admittedly I can not answer every question or point you've made as I simply haven't done enough research on it yet. but first let me say that I do not live in a bubble, nor was I "brought up" in a Christian household to be "Indoctrinated" by it. My views are subject to change based on the information I am given and am not content with living by "Blind Faith".
First off, I'm pretty sure the "days" that are being used in the genesis are units of time not specifically associated with the earth's rotation to the sun. Many theorize that it might not even be traditional 24 hour days although I don't really see that. It's possible that God created "Days" before he synchronized the solar system to to them.
Also, The words weren't "Written by God" but inspired by him and written by people.
In the Bible the word "Slave" was used to mean more or less someone who owes a debt to someone and must work it off because they can't pay it themselves, far from what we in our modern culture would consider slaves like the ones working farms or even sex slavery that happens all around the world. When the bible says "If you beat your slave within an inch of their life there will be no punishment" that's because they are already beaten beyond the ability to do any more work and are let go.
Yes the Bible says women may not preach in church, I'm not 100% sure why and I admit that. I will say however that that doesn't mean women are regarded as "Lesser" in the Bible, not at all, for starters, Several of the books in the Bible are Written by women! Psalms for instance, one of the most notable books in the old testament. Another point I'd like to make is regarding the resurrection of Jesus in which he told the women to testify that he has indeed risen! In that time, women's opinions were considered lesser by the general population, that is true but that doesn't mean it was right and even Jesus knew this. He trusted the women to testify when he knew that society would be skeptical.
As far as the food restrictions, I'm pretty sure it's a health thing as well as a spiritual cleanliness thing which was heavily enforced back in the old testament days. As someone who is kosher by choice, I understand why a lot of the things God said not to eat are simply not good for you. I mean, first of all when you really think about it, pork is gross anyway. Shellfish are basically just insects under water. I see it as a "you are what you eat" kind of thing and you want your body to be made of good things instead of animals that are nasty and eat rotten corpses and stuff.
Your understanding of where the Bible even came from seems to be lacking. It was not written 500 years ago, it's not even originally one book but a collection of scrolls and scribes written over several millenniums. From what I understand they are not even in chronological order, they have been put into the book, the Bible, by people who wanted it all to be in a convenient place and published for everyone and translated into as many languages as they could.
It is sadly very true that religion is used for corrupt people to gain power over the common people. If you look at the history of Catholicism you'll understand how they abused the scriptures in order to basically scam people out of their money by making up a sort of "Purgatory tax" that people can pay to help their deceased loved ones who are spending time in purgatory get to heaven faster, none of this is even biblical at all!
Finally I want to say that Jesus was an actual person who existed, 90% of the worlds historians, both Christian and otherwise are in agreement and many even find the evidence for his resurrection to be compelling. You are 100% correct in saying that reading the Bible is not historical proof and could have just as easily been written by some wacko on drugs, however Historical evidence will show that we have more than enough evidence to support that many of the things written in the Bible are based on real world events, especially the events surrounding Jesus, Pontius Pilot, the leader who sentenced Jesus to be crucified, The apostilles, and even shortly after Jesus' death many writings by people, both believers and otherwise claiming either they have seen it with their own eyes or skeptics complaining about "Those wacky Christians" and saying things like "Wait, didn't we just kill that guy? what on earth are they going on about?"
So, I am far from knowing everything there is to know about this subject, I am still learning and I expect to still be learning until I die. There are much, MUCH smarter people than me who have spent their entire lives studying and analyzing the scriptures, translations, historical documents, scientific evidence, etc. If we knew everything there was to know I suspect there would be no need for debates like this, nor would there be any doubt at all. At least, I'd like to think that but you know how people are, Flat-earthers, covid deniers, anti-vaxers, etc. people will be people.
NOW I KNOW that I have not touched on everything you have pointed out and I know that what I have said regarding the topics I have touched on may not be satisfactory answers to you. Like I said, I don't know everything there is to know on these subjects. However, I am more than willing to learn and change my views on things as I continue to gain knowledge. For instance, I admit 100% that I don't know anything about Slaying your wife if she's not a virgin, or dashing your children against the stones.
That is why I encourage you to give me some of the bible verses you are referring to so that I can see them for myself and look into the context surrounding them. My Goal here is not to "Convert" or "Indoctrinate" anyone but rather have a discussion on these topics so that I, you and anyone else who might be reading this might be able to make more informed decisions about what to believe because in the end, arguing gets us no where and only causes more confusion and bitterness. If we could all learn to be respectful and treat each other like human beings who have a brain in our skulls then we might become closer to figuring out this world and the nature of it and where it all came from.
One more thing. I'll be honest, After all is said and done, I, as a Christian believe that the absolute most important thing is what Jesus said to his disciples during the sermon on the mount.
Love God with all your heart and love others as you love yourself.
Even if you don't believe in God I think that second part is absolutely vital. Treat others the way you want to be treated, The golden rule.
